Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre is a city in southern Brazil, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, set on the Lagoa dos Patos. With a population of more than 3 million, it is an important industrial and cultural centre. Known for churrasco and chimarrão, it is the heart of gaúcho culture. Porto Alegre hosted the first World Social Forum and is famous for its participatory budget. The climate is subtropical, and the best time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are pleasant. The city is also home to the rival football clubs Grêmio and Internacional.
