Iceland, a Nordic country in the north of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is a land of geysers, volcanoes and glaciers. The capital is Reykjavik, home to 36% of its 388,790 inhabitants. The official language is Icelandic. The country's culture and politics are tied to Europe. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the south of the island has a temperate climate despite lying close to the Arctic Circle. Summers are cool and winters mild.
