Bergen
Bergen, set in Vestland county where the North Sea meets the Norwegian Sea, is the second largest city in Norway (289 330 inhabitants). Known as the gateway to the fjords, it features on the UNESCO list. Founded in 1070 by Olaf III, it was once the capital of Norway and an important Hanseatic port. Today it is a key fishing and commercial port. Bergen offers an extensive transport system, including the Floibanen and Ulriksbanen funiculars. The best time to visit is summer, when temperatures are pleasant and moderate.
