    Singapore
    Singapore, a city-state in South-East Asia, occupies the island of Singapore and several dozen smaller islands close to the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Founded by the British in 1819, it gained independence in 1965. Its name comes from the Sanskrit words simha (lion) and pura (city). The Chinese community is the largest in Singapore, and the Merlion statue is the symbol of the city. The tropical climate, with temperatures of 25-31°C, makes the dry season from November to January the best time to visit.
