    Tunis
Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, lies on the Lake of Tunis, just 10 km from the Gulf of Tunis. The city is the country's largest cultural and economic centre as well as an important tourist destination. The medina, inscribed on the UNESCO list, and the 13th-century kasbah are well worth seeing. Tunis has a rich history going back to a Phoenician settlement, and in 2018 Souad Abderrahim became the first woman mayor in the Arab world. The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when temperatures are moderate.
