Perugia
Perugia, the capital of Umbria in central Italy, is a city with a rich history reaching back to Etruscan times. Set between Lake Trasimeno and the Tiber, it has around 150 000 inhabitants. In the Middle Ages it was an important battleground between Guelphs and Ghibellines. It is known for a picturesque old town full of Renaissance and Gothic monuments, such as the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Fontana Maggiore. The temperate climate, with warm summers and mild winters, favours visits in spring and autumn.
